An obstacle I run into frequently with clients is their obsessive weighing of themselves. Some do it everyday, some do it multiple times a day. Psychologically this is not a good idea.
Your weight can fluctuate 5-7lbs throughout the course of your day easily with food in your stomach, waste in your system, and water retention.
If you weigh yourself everyday you risk a few psychological obstacles:
- If you weigh in and haven't lost weight since the last time you checked, it may psych you out and possibly even depress you. This may even put you in the mindset of "What's the point? I may as well treat myself to something I want." Now you've just slowed down the process. You can maintain the same weight for a few days, and then one morning wake up and have had a drop off of a pound or two. You just have to hang in there!
- On the flipside... Some people weigh in and see how much they've lost, and then feel a sense of entitlement to break diet. That they have some room to work with, and can get away with a little treat. Thusly reversing the progress they have made.
I have set days, and times with all of my clients for when they weigh in. Not knowing, having that mystery of whether or not you have lost weight, keeps you on top of your game. It makes you stick harder to your diet, and training so that when you do get your ONE weigh in per-week you're going to be happy with what you see.
So, it's important to resist that temptation! In some cases I've had my clients hide their scale in their closet so they won't be tempted to check their weight every day.
